So…what the DUCT is this race about?

Join us on Sunday, July 13, for the Fun-DUCT-Raiser — your neighbourhood family-friendly regatta that has become a must-see event at Spryfield Days.

Participants enter the race as an individual or team and then build a boat out of only two items: cardboard and duct tape! And then they put their boat into the water and race against other crews! Some fly through the water…and some end up qualifying for the Titanic Award celebrating the best sinking. All the money raised goes towards

caring for this area of our cherished Long Lake Park: its trails, facilities, water access points, and even potential future expansion.

Not interested in sourcing your own cardboard, yet still want to get in on the fun? Set sail in a pre-fab boat made by Maritime Paper!

Maritime Paper, Eastern Canada’s Ecofriendly corrugated cardboard manufacturer, is returning as a sponsor for 2025.

Their team designed a pre-cut boat ready to be assembled and taped. Think IKEA and substitute tape for an allen key. Six boaters gave their design a shot at last year’s race, including Ren’s Racer, who took home one of the highly coveted People’s Choice Awards! Thank you, Maritime Paper, for your support and all the extra cardboard!

How did this wacky event start anyway?

Back in 2016, on Earth Day, the Waterview and Lakefront trails at Long Lake Park were officially opened, followed by a boat launch, two parking lots, and bathrooms. Access points were also created to keep the park accessible to walkers, runners, swimmers, bikers, kayakers, canoeists, and four-legged friends. Ensuring everything is available and in tip-top shape for park-goers has been a passion of POLYCORP. To help do that, they came up with a zany idea…and the Fun-DUCT-Raiser was born.
